In the paper done by Reznkov, the research team tries to make a sustainable model for PTSD by testing animals with stressors and measuring the fear response over time. Reznikov uses the 30% of human population introduced to stress develop PTSD, and after several experiments including novelty suppressed feeding, open field test, and the elevated plus maze, that fear conditioning was still present and was failed to be exterminated from the rat's behavior. The rate was 25%, which shows a decent correlation between the two, and Reznikov uses this as his main point of evidence. However, as much as I like this experiment to create a model for PTSD, I would like more information on the symptoms of PTSD, just to be sure that non-extinct fear conditioning is the correct model.
Herry focuses on the neural mechanisms between fear and exploration. He specifies a certain population of neurons associated with the hippocampus and amygdyla. Herry goes through a number of different neurological experiments to define how each set of neuron activates at opposites and that there is a time delay between fear- correlated and exploration correlated neurons.
